We may run our practice a little differently than what you might be used to

Will you care for my horse at my farm?

At this time, we do not offer on-farm services. There are many reasons why we have decided not to provide on farm services, the first being a large service area. We want to be as available as possible to you and your horse and if we have to drive an hour or more to get to you, it leaves us with much less time to spend caring for your horse and the horses of others. This also leads to less expensive veterinary bills as we do not have to charge for time spent on the road - especially with rising gas prices. If you do not own a trailer for your horse, we recommend borrowing one or having someone else trailer your horse to SREC.

As a practice we have access to a beautiful facility, Sunset Reins Equine Center (SREC). This is a climate controlled environment that provides everything needed to get the most accurate diagnosis. For example, if your horse becomes lame in January, it is extremely difficult to thoroughly perform a lameness exam as the ground is frozen - asking your horse to trot in a line, let alone on a lunge line, on frozen and/or icy ground could cause more injury to himself and cause injury to the person leading the horse. The hard ground also makes it extremely difficult to determine if the issue is bone in origin or soft tissue in origin (this can be determined by trotting on both hard and soft surfaces). Not to mention, it’s just plain cold outside and nothing moves like it should when it’s -50 degrees outside! SREC also has stocks so our team members can work safely around your horse. Stalls are also available to clients, if needed, during appointment.

However, there are a few exceptions:

On select days, we will perform preventative care services on farms that have 8 or more horses at one location and when that location is greater than 30 miles from SREC. Keep in mind, this is for routine annual exams, vaccinations, and Coggins only. If you have concerns or your horse is requiring something additional, you will need to trailer your horse to SREC.

Will you care for my horse after hours?

As we are only a one doctor practice, we do not be offer any after hours emergency services. We will do our best to prepare you for any emergency that may arise so you feel prepared. We truly care for your horses deeply and by not taking after hours emergencies, we hope to prevent compassion fatigue, which is so common in the veterinary industry (and part of the reason for the veterinary shortage). All of our team members are moms to young children and we want to maintain the best work-life balance possible - time to go to sporting events, time to eat dinner as a family, and time to tuck little ones into bed. Even though it seems like the lack of emergency hours is taking time and care away from your horse, it is actually allowing us to better care for your horse as our focus will be 100% on your horse during normal business hours.

If something unexpected occurs during open hours, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to work you in during the day or direct you to a veterinary clinic that can better assist you.
